Shabby Shepherds

Shabby Shepherds is located on the edge of Great Salkeld, a conservation village in the Eden Valley. We are a 15 minute hop from the Lake District National Park. With stunning, unbroken panoramic views of the River Eden, the Pennines and the historic Settle to Carlisle railway our shepherd's hut sits in one of our grass meadows. The views from the hut have been described as 'totally unbelievable'. Our guest reviews say it all! The hut features an en-suite shower room, a kitchenette with electric hob, microwave/grill combi oven, kettle, toaster and fridge/freezer. Egyptian cotton towels and 100% cotton bedding is provided. The seating/dining area features hand made soft furnishings and the king-sized bed (which is made up on arrival) easily folds down from the wall. Outside is a seating area set around a fire pit with BBQ grill and logs are available free of charge. There is also an outdoor dining area. Our 14 acre smallholding is home to Ryeland sheep, alpacas, hens and horses. You are free to roam around our land and feed the alpacas with the food provided. Our aim is to provide a tranquil environment where you can relax, unwind and take in the natural beauty of our small piece of Eden.
We are really looking forward to welcoming you to Shabby Shepherds. We bought our smallholding in 2018 and have slowly grown our menagerie of animals. We both have busy and stressful day jobs and our home life provides us with the peace and relaxation we need to balance this. It was a natural progression for us to share what we have with guests. Having both lived in Cumbria for most of our lives we have an extensive knowledge of the Lake District and the Eden Valley. We are both outdoor enthusiasts ourselves and are keen to help you get the very most out of your stay with us. We are always happy to point you in the right direction, be it recommending a walking route to finding the very best places to eat! We do our utmost to protect the environment. We use no herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilisers on our land. We use eco-friendly cleaning and laundry products. Pure Lakes toiletries (a Cumbrian company) are here for you to use. The bottles are taken back to the workshop to be refilled once empty thus reducing plastic waste. We have an electric car charging point on the premises for you to use for a small fee. We really hope you enjoy your stay with us. Follow us on Instagram @shabbyshepherds to keep up with our latest news. Viv and Simon x @shabbyshepherds
The main attraction for visitors is our proximity to the Lake District National Park with all that has to offer. Lake Ullswater is a 20 minute drive and Keswick a 30 minute drive. However, the Eden Valley, with its chocolate box villages, country pubs, lovely walks and stunning scenery is much quieter. We have walking guides for the area available for you to use. Lacy's caves next to the River Eden and Long Meg, a neolithic stone circle are right on our doorstep. The market town of Penrith is 10 minutes away and has an abundance of supermarkets, individual shops, pubs, restaurants, takeaways, a leisure centre, parks, a cinema and railway station (on the west coast main line). Our neighbouring village of Lazonby (2 miles) has a Co-op/Post Office, an outdoor swimming pool, a railway station on the historic Settle-Carlisle line and riverside walks. Pubs! The Highland Drove in our village and only a 3 minute walk/stagger away. They serve amazing food and drinks. Booking is essential (@highlanddrove) Alternatively, The Fetherston Arms and The Crown in Kirkoswald (3 miles) also serve excellent food and beer.
